Mumbai Metro is genuinely more confusing than most Indian systems for one reason: it's run by three different operators across its lines, and that shapes almost everything about how you use it.
The interchange map is the #1 thing to get right
Here's where the lines actually meet:
- DN Nagar - Line 1 ↔ Line 2A, an easy same-station walk
- Western Express Highway (WEH) - Line 1 ↔ Line 7, a near cross-platform transfer
- Marol Naka - Line 1 (elevated) ↔ Line 3 (underground), a longer walk than it looks on the map, though well signposted
- Dahisar East - Line 2A ↔ Line 7, now a 3-line hub Budget a few extra minutes at Marol Naka specifically - the elevated-to-underground transfer is the one that catches people out.
Different apps for different lines
You'll want "Mumbai Metro One" for Line 1, and "MetroConnect3" for tickets and card management on Lines 2A, 7, and 3. There isn't one app that does everything yet.
Line 3 is the newest and the one worth knowing about

Bottom line
Before you travel, check which operator's line you're on and which card or app it needs - that single check will save you more confusion than anything else about riding Mumbai Metro for the first time.
