First Time on Delhi Metro? Complete Beginner's Guide

The Delhi Metro looks intimidating from the outside - 10+ colour-coded lines, almost 300 stations, and stations like Rajiv Chowk that feel like airports. But the system itself is genuinely beginner-friendly. Here's the full walkthrough.

Step 1: Get a ticket

Three ways, easiest first:

  1. QR ticket on your phone - download the DMRC Momentum 2.0 (Delhi Sarthi) app, pick your start and end stations, pay by UPI, scan the QR at the gate. No queue, no cash.
  2. Token from the counter or vending machine - the classic. Tell them your destination, pay (fares run ₹11–₹64 by distance), get a plastic coin. Tap it at entry, drop it in the slot at exit.
  3. Smart card / NCMC - ₹150 to start, 10% off every ride. Worth it from your very first week if you'll ride regularly.

Step 2: Security check

Every station has airport-style security: bag through the X-ray, you through the metal detector, quick pat-down. Separate queues for men and women. It's fast - 2 to 5 minutes normally.

Step 3: Find your platform

Everything is colour-coded. Know your line colour and your terminal station direction - that's how platforms are signed. Going from Rajiv Chowk to Hauz Khas? That's the Yellow Line "towards Millennium City Centre Gurugram". Signboards, floor arrows and the app's route planner all spell it out. Overhead displays show the next train's destination and arrival time.

Step 4: Interchanges

Changing lines happens inside the paid area - don't exit the gates. Follow the coloured signs to the other line's platform. Big interchanges (Rajiv Chowk, Kashmere Gate, Central Secretariat, Hauz Khas) involve a decent walk, so add 5–10 minutes. Your single ticket covers the whole journey, interchanges included.

Peak hours: avoid if you can

Time Crowd level
8:00–10:30 AM weekdays Sardine mode
5:30–8:30 PM weekdays Sardine mode, part 2
12 noon–5 PM, after 9 PM Comfortable
Sundays & holidays Relaxed + discounted fares

Bonus: card users who enter during off-peak windows (before 8 AM, 12–5 PM, after 9 PM, Mon–Sat) get an extra 10% off on top of the standard 10% card discount.

Etiquette (learn these fast)

  • First coach = women only. Marked in pink on the platform. Men, don't even lean in.
  • No eating, drinking or sitting on the floor - all fineable (₹200)
  • Let passengers off before boarding
  • Stand on the right side of escalators, walk on the left. Wait - in Delhi it's usually stand left, walk right; just follow the crowd
  • Reserved seats (seniors, differently-abled, women) - vacate when needed

Handy extras

  • Google Maps handles Delhi Metro routing well; the DMRC app is the source of truth for timings
  • Trains run roughly 5:00–5:30 AM to around 11:00–11:30 PM, varying by line and station - check the app for your station's first/last train
  • Lost? Every station has a customer care counter, and staff are used to confused first-timers

That's it. One ride and you'll wonder why you were nervous.
