The one trap that catches almost everyone: Sunday hours
Kolkata Metro runs a dramatically shorter Sunday and holiday schedule. On the Green Line, for example, trains start around 6:55 AM on weekdays but not until roughly 2:15 PM on Sundays. If you're planning a Sunday morning trip anywhere in the city, check the day-specific timetable first - this is the single most common first-timer mistake.
Two things worth riding just to see
- Howrah station, on the Green Line, is the deepest metro station in India at roughly 33 metres below the surface - and it sits right next to Howrah Railway Station, so it's a natural landmark for orientation if you're arriving by train.
- The Howrah-Mahakaran stretch runs through India's first underwater metro tunnel, passing beneath the Hooghly River about 13 metres below the riverbed. It's a short ride, but a genuine novelty most first-time riders don't expect.
Fares are the cheapest in the country
Kolkata has India's lowest starting metro fare - just ₹5 for trips up to 2 km, scaling up to around ₹25 (Blue Line) or ₹30 (Green Line) for the longest rides.
